CIEE IN ALICANTE

The study abroad programs at CIEE Alicante are designed for students seeking to increase their language skills while taking courses across academic areas from both CIEE Alicante and Universidad de Alicante. Courses are taught by faculty from the Universidad de Alicante and instructors that specialize in teaching Spanish as a second language. CIEE Alicante is conveniently located on the campus of the Universidad de Alicante.

Universidad de Alicante was founded in 1979 and offers more than fifty degrees. It is located just three miles north of the city in San Vicente and hosts more than 35,000 students. Students will find a rich array of opportunities to get involved on campus.

HOUSING
Options available:
  • Homestays: Students have an option to live with a Spanish-speaking family (with or without another CIEE student) no more than a 25-30-minute commute from the UA campus.
  • Residence Halls: There is an off-campus residence hall available with some single and double rooms about a 10-minute walk from the University de Alicante in San Vicente, where students can live amongst Spanish and other internationals. This is about a 25-30-minute bus ride to get into the city center of Alicante.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
  • Day trips to provincial highlights like the Algar Waterfalls, Canelobre Caves and Guadalest Castle, Altea, Calpe, etc. or to Valencian Autonomous Community
  • Overnight excursions to cities such as Madrid, Valencia, or Granada
  • Linguistic exchange programs with Universidad de Alicante students
  • Weekly activities offered by both CIEE and the University Language Center include hiking, sports, cinema, cooking workshops, dance classes, theater, guided tours
  • Volunteer – Opportunities to give back to the local community

INFORMATION:
  • Classes are held Monday through Friday during the intensive cycle, and Monday through Thursday during the regular semester.
  • The Fall and Spring program begins with an intensive two-week Spanish course to facilitate cultural immersion.
  • Classes range from Spanish cinema and art history to intercultural communication and Spanish society. Students enroll in five classes per semester
  • o One mandatory intensive Spanish-language course
    o One mandatory intermediate or pre-advanced Spanish language course
    o Three elective courses (choose from CIEE courses and/or Universidad de Alicante)

  • The Global Navigator High School Study Abroad Program includes two different summer experiences:
  • o The Spanish Foodie Culture summer session includes learning about foods unique to this region and learning about their historical and geographical context. The summer session culminates in a final project.
    o Spanish Language Intensive is open exclusively to students with two years of High School Spanish and above, as this program requires that participants speak Spanish at all times, with the possibility to earn up to 4 college credits
