SEMESTER PROGRAM IN HISPANIC STUDIES The Program in Hispanic Studies is offered at the Carlos III University of Madrid and may be taken in either Fall (from mid-September to mid-December) or Spring (from February to late May). Students must have completed two years of university level Spanish or equivalent before attending the Program. It provides an understanding of Spanish life and culture while helping students to elevate their Spanish language competence to advacned level. The Program consists of special courses for foreigners, designed by the Curso de Estudios Hispánicos of Carlos III University, such as Language and Composition, Art, Literature, History, Cinema, Spanish and European Law, Spanish and European Institutions, Spanish Economics in its European Context, Spain through the Press. Some of the courses (Language, Literature, History) are mandatory, while the rest are electives. Students attending the Fall Semester may request an extension, and remain at Carlos III during the spring taking regular university classes. Students attending the Spring Semester may register for one or two regular university classes. Students are placed with families. Cost varies depending on UC registration and educational fees. For 1999 cost estimates (including fees, room and meals, books and other suppies, orientation, excursions and so forth) are approximately $8,000. YEAR LONG PROGRAMS On EAP, UC students may complement their undergraduate degree work in different academic institutions, Universidad Complutense and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and Universidad de Granada. EAP participants at all locations select regular university courses based on individual academic interests and, at the Universidad de Granada and the Universidad Complutense, special courses targeted or created specifically for the program. The year long academic program in Spain begins in August with a four-week Intensive Language Program held at either Madrid or Granada. ILP consists of grammar, composition and conversation classes, and includes courses on literature and history. Orientation runs concurrently with the ILP and provides information about Spain, the host universities and the academic program; covers logistical issues of immediate concern such as banking, housing, transportation and medical care. In Madrid, one of the ILP courses, History of Madrid, includes field trips in addition to lectures, and serves to introduce students to the city; in Granada, Spanish students serve as monitors during ILP and take small groups of UC students around the city. UC students who meet admission requirements but whose command of academic Spanish requires additional preparation are encouraged to attend a pre-ILP in Cádiz during the month of July. This program is organized in collaboration with the Universidad de Cádiz and is designed to improve specific compositional skills as well as to provide socio-historical information abouRocío Navas para el programa de Carlos III, de Paula Ortega para el de la Complutense, de Inmacula Manrique para el de Granada, de Gemma Blas para el de Barcelona y el de Inma Carmona para el programa de Córdoba. t the multi-cultural legacy of Andalucía. Cost varies depending on UC registration and educational fees. For 1999-2000 cost estimates (including fees, room and meals, books and other supplies, orientation, excursions and so forth) are approximately $14,000.
